Support Our Troops

August 24th, 2011 by newark No comments »

The United States Junior Chamber is proud to partner with the “Support Our Troops ® ” Program.

The License Plate Project:

The single most important thing the Jaycees can do is to cause the completion of these government issued license motor vehicle specialty plates. They will generate dependable recurring benefit to the troops and their families for decades to come. You are participating in the construction of a permanent national resource for the troops and their families, built by average people working together across this nation.

The Support Our Troops!® plates (a) allow people to publicly state their support for their troops, and (b) provide a means of raising patriotic private money to bolster the troops and their families who are both sacrificing to protect all of us and our families. They will put thousands of kids through school, send millions in care packages to their deployed parents, meet emergency needs, and the like. SOT® has completed about 24 states so far. Many Legislatures approved he plate unanimously, and Governors signed them into law.

For more Information on how to get involved in this project click HERE

Care PackagesCare Package Goods:
The top things requested by the troops are:

  • phone cards (#1 most requested item; so they can phone their loved ones)
  • VISA and M/C gift cards (#2 most requested item; gives them maximum flexibility)
  • 1 GB and 2 GB USB memory sticks (external hard drives) (blank)
  • wet wipes, individually wrapped in foil packs (not gel bottles)
  • disposable razors – men’s and women’s
  • movie DVD’s (clean content)
  • music CDs (clean content)
  • iPODs (empty)
  • small earphones
  • breath mints

The Rules:

  • ·         Nothing less than the best for these first class people! All first class, brand new, unopened, safety-sealed goods for America’s finest.
  • Please include copies of the purchase receipts for the items for safety cross-checkingwhenever possible.
  • Please include a picture of the people sending the goods, and any notes about why you / they did this so the troops can know how much the folks here really love, respect and appreciate them. We want the troops and their families to know who, way back here at home, is thinking about them.
  • Cards, letters, and the like need to be unsealed and inspectable.

Transportation of Goods:

  • Sometimes there will be a substantial amount of goods in one location, and other times there will be smaller amounts in several cities. Efficiency allows everyone to do more, and it makes little sense to ship goods 2 – 3 times to get them to the final destination. Therefore, the method of sending the goods will vary depending on quantities and locations. As a generalrule:
  • if you have assembled several USPS flat rate boxes worth of proper goods, and are willing to be a registered shipper with SOT, SOT will provide you with APO addresses for that specific shipment (they change each time).
  • If you have assembled a pallet’s worth of the same or varied goods, please contact the Newark Jaycees at info@newarkjaycees.org.

Relay For Life

United States Junior Chamber – First Non-Corporate Partner to Relay!

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity. It offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are overnight events, up to 24 hours in length. Relay For Life brings together millions of people to raise money and awareness to help prevent cancer, save lives, and diminish suffering from the disease.

Continually, JAYCEES members are forming teams, volunteering at local Relay events, and educating their friends about cancer prevention and early detection.

To get involved locally, contact info@doverjaycees.org and mention your interest in the Relay For Life community event.  We will have our chapter contact our local American Cancer Society office and let them know of all our details including you as a member on our team.

Oustanding Young Farmer Program

June 21st, 2011 by newark No comments »

Since 1954 Outstanding Young Farmers has been a signature program of The US Jaycees.  Its a great tie between the foundation of our country and helping recognize key people in agriculture locally.  The Dover Jaycees most recently submitted a national honoree in 2010.  Although many don’t think of Newark as an agriculture community, there is significant sate impact in agriculture from our town.  This is one of the easist programs to run and if any of our members want to run it, we have a guide for the chairman.  It’s like running a project if you were painting from numbers. The requirements for submission of this award is simple they must be in Jaycee age range, they must be actual farm operators, deriving a minimum of two-thirds of their income from farming, and All information on the nomination form must be completed. The cost of nominating someone to your chapter is free because it is sponsored by John Deere and as a bonus for submitting  you can earn POC (Parade of Chapter) points for our chapter.  So there’s no reason why we can’t locate at least one nominee to submit.  They don’t even have to live or be in Newark.

This is one of those programs that can bring some great positive attention to our chapter if you nominate a farmer. You could send out a press release announcing your chapter is seeking nominees or send out a press release announcing a nominee on be half of your chapter. For additional information on this program or to download the submission form visit the OYF US Jaycees website http://www.usjaycees.org/index.php/outstanding-young-farmer after completing the form email it to president@delawarejaycees.com and it will automatically go to The Outstanding Farmers of America (OFA) Fraternity who will do the final judging.
